You will follow the paths that were made by the Tehuelches during migrations, which helped to build the Road nº 40, in a way that it crosses from south to north the province of Santa Cruz and from West to East.
The Tehuelches were a nomad group of people which lived in constant movement during the different seasons of the year. They moved in order to find better places according to weather and animals to hunt.
These incredible trips are described in the Libro del Documentalista Ingles (A documental book), by George Musters, who in 1868/9 and thanks to Don Luis Piedrabuena (see notes) friend of the Tehuelches, joined this group of people, going from Magallanes to the city of Viedma, Rio Negro, arriving first at the Northeast of Santa Cruz where they left the old people for them to live their last years. A place with an excellent weather and good food conditions, this place is nowadays LOS ANTIGUOS.
It is proper to say that, in Tehuelche vocabulary, the word “old” is only used in reference to minor things, because for them, the old people were not “old” but antique and wise people. (antiguos). You can find that trip and that experience of Musters on the web site 1click in books. The book is called “Vida entre los Patagones”. books 1Click.
Spirit of La 40 wants you to see and live the experiences that were felt and lived for our ancestors who were owners of every thing, and we also want to commemorate this pacific tribe that could not survive the arrival of the white people, their culture and customs.
Note: Teniente Coronel de La Marina Luis Piedra Buena (1833-1883)
He was an Argentinian sailor, simple, humble, hard working, and his life is today the best form of patriotism in the history of the austral seas of Argentina.
