El Chalten is in the Department Argentinian Lake, north of Viedma Lake, where the Vueltas and Fitz Roy rivers join together, within the area of the National Reserve Viedma Zone of the National Park the Glaziers.
In this place the magic of the glaziers, the lakes, the presence of the Fitz Roy are combined together. The top of the mountains are almost always covered by a cloud. The tehuelches thought this was smoke and for this reason they named it Chalten that means volcano.
The town has 200 inhabitants and it is 220km from Calafate, provincial road 11, national road 40 and provincial 23.
It is next to the Viedma Lake and its reserve. It is a centre of trekkers and andinistas reason why it has been declared National capital of trekking. Most of the outings start at the town, and it is not necessary to be an expert but you should have some information about the area in order not to get lost in its beauty.
The Torre and Fitz Roy mountains, together with the Viedma, Upsala and Moyano glaziers make this scenery perfect.
