The journey starts going to the North by the provincial road nº 1 that joins the provincial road nº2. In whale season, in order to see the whales, you can go to the old road to Piramides. When you arrive at the Control Center El Desempeño (48km from Puerto Madryn) you have to pay to enter the Protected Natural Area Peninsula Valdes. This ticket has daily validity and it permits the visit of all the units of the area (Istmo Ameghino, Isla de los pajaros, Punta Piramide, Caleta Valdes and Punta Norte).
After 26km you get to the Istmo Carlos Ameghino, thin part of land that joins the Peninsula with the Continent, from which you can see both gulfs: San Jose to the left and Nuevo to the right. You can stop there and enter the Centro de Interpretacion and History Museum to get information about the flora and fauna, geography and history of the Peninsula. This center has qualified staff as well as services.
5 km from this place, descending to San Jose Gulf, is The birds Island, important reservoir of birds that also has a Center of interpretation. This island cannot be entered since 1974 because it is considered intangible zone.
The copy of the capilla Fuerte san Jose, destroyed in 1810, has remained as testimony of the Spanish settlement of 1779.
After 25km you arrive at Puerto Piramides, the only populated and center of services in Peninsula Valdes.
Punta Piramide is only some minutes away from this place. There, you can visit a Colonia de Reproduccion from December to March. From Puerto Piramides and to Caleta Valdes, Punta Norte o Punta Delgada you will have to take debris roads to reach those points. Before doing this, it is important to get fuel and water in the service station of Puerto Piramides.
It is recommended to drive carefully on debris because you have to be aware of the presence of some animals. In this way, you will avoid accidents and you will enjoy the charm of the place.
Caleta valdes:
Place of sea elephants. This unit has information services, restaurant and regional products. From here you can get to La Caleta. Only 2km to the North you can observe a small penguins colony (from September to March aprox.).
Punta Norte:
Important place of sea elephants ( and Otaria Flavescens). This unit has centers of interpretation and fauna keeper.
In Caleta valdes as well as in Punta Norte it is possible to see killer whales from October to April. On the North coast of the Peninsula there is a penguin colony that can be visited only by entering the private rural settlements.
Punta delgada:
Place of sea elephants and centenario faro de la Armada Argentina. As it is a private establishment you can visit it as long as you use the services provided by it. + Puerto Madryn.
