Buenos Aires was founded twice:
The first time in 1536. Don Pedro de Mendoza, Spanish colonizer, established the first settlement. He called it: Cuidad del Espiritu Santo and Puerto Santa Maria del Buen Ayre. The second and last time, was in 1580. Juan de Garay called it Ciudad de Trinidad. In the XIX century a great amount of immigrants arrived at the city. This was promoted by the Argentinian State to populate the nation.
Spanish, Italian, Sirio-Libaneses, Polish and Russian gave Buenos Aires the eclecticism that distinguishes it.
Throughout the XX century more migrations allowed Buenos Aires to be a cosmopolitan city where people from different cultures live together.
Her inhabitants are called "Porteños", name that refers to the condition of Buenos Aires of being a Portuaria City (having a harbour). The people from the city are called "bonaerenses". The spirit of the porteños is kind and that of hospitality: they use to organize dinners at home to share with guests. The tipycal drink is el "mate". It is prepared by pouring water into a small bowl containing yerba mate. Some people add sugar, but the majority prefers "un amargo".
